Apprentice Teachers Fall 2014
Apprentice Teaching is completed the final semester prior to graduation and consists of a three-course combination for a total of seven enrollment hours. During Apprentice Teaching, you will perform all daily classroom activities as the teacher of the classroom for the entire semester. You will perform these duties under the guidance of the classroom mentor teacher. Completion of Apprentice Teaching does not grant teacher certification. Please see the Certification & Licensure heading on our site for information on obtaining your Teacher Certificate.
Registration for Apprentice Teaching: You must register for Apprentice Teaching through TK20 the semester prior to apprentice teaching. The application is only open during a two-week window at the beginning of the semester. Dates for application are available on the College of Education Early Field Experience website. No late applications are accepted, so be sure to pay attention to dates.
Final Semester Enrollment: You must register for EDSE 4608, EDSE 4618, and EDSE 4628 to complete apprentice teaching.
Financial Aid and Health Insurance Eligibility: Although considered part-time enrollment status for federal financial aid purposes (Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, Perkins Loans, Parent Loans), apprentice teaching is generally considered a full-time load. You may request a "waiver" for continued eligibility for outside sponsored scholarships (this does not include scholarships offered through the UNT General Scholarship Fund) and/or health insurance. The full-load letter is available from the College of Education Advising Office or the TNT Advisor at Jennifer.McDonald@unt.edu.
Apprentice Teaching Placement: TNT currently works with five school districts for apprentice teaching placement: Denton, Lewisville, McKinney, Ft. Worth, and Irving. Although our current partnership is with the above school districts, future opportunities may include additional school districts and campuses. Our Apprentice Teaching Cadre Coordinator, Ms. Nancy Terry, will work with you to find an apprentice teaching placement that fits your teaching style and personality while taking into account your desired placement location, transportation issues, and any other factors that may exist. Ms. Terry takes a personal approach to apprentice teaching placements, so ensure you check your UNT email frequently.
Applying For Jobs: Many opportunities are available for TNT Mathematics and Science
Seminar (EDSE 4628): In addition to your classroom teaching, you are expected to attend a one-credit-hour seminar course one night each week. This is a required course, and attendance is mandatory.
For additional questions regarding apprentice teaching, please contact Ms. Nancy Terry by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone.
