TNTX 1200 - Secondary Teacher Education Preparation II: Inquiry-Based Lesson Design (STEP 2)

Prospective math and science teachers become familiar with the middle school environment by observing and discussing middle school culture and by teaching several lessons in a middle school classroom. Students build upon lesson design skills introduced in Step 1 and become familiar with excellent science and mathematics curricula for the middle school setting.

Class meets once a week on campus for 1 1/2 hours. During this time, students learn about the middle school environment and work on inquiry-based lesson design, assessment, and analysis. Students are assigned to a math or science classroom at a local middle school where they complete observations and teach three inquiry-based lessons. Students generally work in pairs, although occasionally a student's availability may be so limited that he or she must work alone. Field and partner assignments are based upon student schedule and transportation needs. This course emphasizes the creation of 5E lesson plans that focus on the importance of using appropriate questioning strategies throughout the lessons. Students develop pre and post-assessments for performance objectives. For their final project, students analyze a lesson based on instructor and mentor teacher feedback, assessment results, and personal reflection.
