TEACH Grant

The TEACH grant is a federally administered grant program geared toward recruiting qualified teachers within high-needs fields to teach in Title I schools. Qualification for the program requires recipient's agreement to teach for four years in a Title I school for each year of grant receipt. Eligible applicants are eligible to receive up to $4000 per year for each four year teaching agreement.

Student Eligibility Requirements:

In order to qualify for the TEACH grant through Teach North Texas, several eligibility requirements must be met:

  1. Student must be an undergraduate student and member of the Teach North Texas program at the University of North Texas.
  2. Student must complete TNTX 1100 prior to application.
  3. One of the following requirements must be met. Standardized test scores (SAT or ACT) at or above the 75th percentile for the year the student took the test. OR, an eligible 3.25 or greater cumulative UNT gpa. OR, an incoming transfer gpa of 3.25 or greater provided the student has completed the equivalent of TNTX 1100 prior to transfer.
  4. The student must agree to teach for four years in a high needs field at a Title I school district within the eight year period directly following graduation and teacher certification. Each subsequent grant extends this requirement by four year increments.
  5. The student must have a current FAFSA on file with the UNT Financial Aid department (demonstration of financial need is not a program requirement but the FAFSA must be completed).

Procedure for TEACH Grant Application:

  1. Visit the federal website at https://teach-ats.ed.gov/ats/studentHome.action. Please read the site carefully as it gives detailed information on program requirements.
  2. Complete the TEACH Grant Initial and Subsequent Counseling found on the federal website at the above link. Print out evidence of completion for submission to Teach North Texas (evidence of completion must include identifying information such as name, birth date, etc.).
  3. Complete the current academic year FAFSA on the federal website at www.fafsa.ed.gov, and provide printed evidence of completion (evidence of completion must include identifying information such as name, birth date, etc.).
  4. Provide printed documentation of standardized test scores if these scores were not submitted during the UNT admission process (documentation must include identifying information such as name, birth date, etc.), or have proof of cumulative 3.25 or greater gpa if being certified via gpa.
  5. Schedule an appointment with the Teach North Texas Program Advisor to complete the required application.
  6. Once all materials have been compiled and submitted to the Teach North Texas Program Advisor, this information will be forwarded to the UNT Student Financial Aid department.
  7. The UNT Financial Aid department will contact you when grant eligibility is confirmed. At that time, you must complete the Agreement to Serve form found at https://teach-ats.ed.gov/ats/studentHome.action and submit to the UNT Financial Aid department to secure release of funds.

Special Notes Regarding TEACH Grant Eligibility:

  1. You are eligible for the TEACH grant with either acceptable standardized test scores or 3.25 or greater cumulative gpa. If your eligibility is certified via gpa, you will be required to complete a subsequent application for each additional year of TEACH Grant acceptance.
  2. If you do not complete the TEACH Grant four year agreement to teach in a high needs field at a Title I school, the grant will revert to a federal loan. You will then be required to repay the loan including interest.
  3. You may choose to teach at any Title I school to fulfill your Agreement to Serve. The following link provides a list of schools designated as high need. Please be aware that this list changes yearly. https://www.tcli.ed.gov/CBSWebApp/tcli/TCLIPubSchoolSearch.jsp
  4. The UNT Financial Aid department confirms program eligibility and authorizes release of federal funds. Please note that Teach North Texas does not administer nor fund the TEACH Grant program.
  5. Acceptance of the TEACH Grant may affect eligibility for additional sources of financial aid. You will need to consult a financial aid officer in the UNT Financial Aid department to determine how acceptance of the TEACH Grant will affect your overall financial aid award package.
